Alfred Wilcox VC Celebration

Sunday 15 September – 12.30 to 13.00 The Alfred Wilcox memorial in Aston Parish Churchyard

There will be a short ceremony focusing upon an event in France on 12th September 1918 when Alfred Wilcox a soldier from Aston won the VC. The ceremony will give equal prominence to the men involved that day who unlike Alfred died in France. The event is being led by Colonel Marius Coulon, 8 Rifles and the Vicar of Aston & Nechells. The Rifles are the successors of Alfred’s own regiment the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry (43rd & 52nd). Car Parking is available in front of the church with access from Aston Hall Road.

Light refreshments available from 12 noon in Aston Parish Church. In the Church there will also be a display about Alfred Wilcox and his family

The terrain

The memorial is located in a closed graveyard that is maintained by Birmingham City Council. There is foot path access to the memorial but there are steps and tree roots. To avoid steps there is a route through a space that is ‘wilded’ and very uneven.

Car Parking

The nearest car park to the memorial is in front of the Church Hall, this is accessed from Witton Lane
