Somme Sunday

Sunday 5th July is marked as Somme Sunday at Aston Parish Church. In addition to the normal Sunday service there is an act of remembrance carried out at the Peace Memorial in the churchyard.

The schedule is:
10:15-10:30 – Arrival
10:30 – Church service begins
11:30 – The service moves to the Peace Memorial
11:45 – Ceremony at Peace Memorial
12:15 – Light refreshments.

The Aston Somme Sunday ceremony is the last survivor of a once common event originating in the aftermath of WW1. It has kept going because people keep coming. The fact that it is the last survivor is providing an opportunity to change the emphasis to the Cenotaphs original purpose as a focus as a statement for Peace.
